What is PEY Co-op?

Through  PEY Co-op, you can focus on professional development without needing to switch between work and school each semester. Participating in PEY  Co-op can help you understand your strengths and interests and use these learning outcomes to fine-tune your career goals and negotiate a higher post-graduation salary based on your experience.

The  PEY Co-op is an optional opportunity to work full time for an employer of your choosing for 12 to 16 consecutive months after the second or third year. As a PEY Co-op student, you can apply to as many positions as you want, and only accept the job offer that aligns with your goals. 

Benefits:

Positions are paid and U of T computer science students earn an average of approximately $49,000 annually, with top salaries reaching over $80,000 in 12 months. 

Co-op programs train you for the real world and are a great opportunity to boost your resume. It is also common for Co-op students to end up working full time after graduation in the same company. 

 

Process:

  1. Attend a PEY Co-op Information Session offered in September
  2. Read the PEY Co-op Student Guides
  3. If you decide to participate, register online through the ECC Portal. You may have to pay a registration fee.
  4. Apply to jobs via the ECC Portal
  5. Participate in PEY Co-op developmental workshops and attend individual appointments (e.g. cover letter, résumé, interview preparation).
  6. Get Work/Co-op Permit (If you are an international student)
  7. Attend interview(s)
  8. Receive job offer(s)
  9. Accept/Decline offer(s)
  10. Begin internship
  11. Complete internship: 12 to 16 months
  12. Return to school, usually starting in September, to finish degree.

Eligibility:

 In good academic standing

  • A Permanent Resident, Canadian Citizen or International undergraduate student studying full-time in a program as outlined below
  • Currently in second or third year with the expectation that you will return to full-time studies at U of T*
  • Not currently part of another co-op program at U of T, including the AEINTCOOP subject POSt
  • Students can only register in one program (PEY Co-op or ESIP) at the Engineering Career Centre (ECC) in any given academic year
  • Students with part-time status may be considered for the programs if they have received accommodation from the University. Examples of accommodation include, but are not limited to: being registered with Accessibility Services, or an active Varsity athlete.
